True to her word, Miss Joan returned just as a busboy was gathering up the empty plates. Feeling compelled to be the perfect hostess, she asked, “How was everything?”

“Terrific as always, Miss Joan,” Alan responded.

His sentiment was echoed by all three of his friends.

“All right, now that your stomachs are full, have you reached any conclusions as to what your course of action is going to be?” the diner owner asked, looking at each engineer carefully, ending with Alan.

“Yes, ma’am, we have,” Alan answered her. “We’ll be outlining everything at the town-hall meeting tomorrow.”

“So you do have a plan?” Miss Joan asked.

“Yes, ma’am, we do. We’ll be donating our time and Raegan here is going to initiate a fundraiser so that money can be raised to cover all the expenses that will be needed to get all the materials that will be necessary to carry out these plans.”

The sooner she got this out, the better, Raegan thought. “We’re hoping to be able to use your diner for the fundraiser,” Raegan told the woman.

To her surprise, her words were actually met with a smile from Miss Joan.

“That,” Miss Joan declared, “is an excellent idea. And to launch it, why don’t we have a get-acquainted party at Murphy’s Saloon the day after the town-hall meeting?”

It was a suggestion, but being Miss Joan, she didn’t anticipate any opposition.

And she didn’t get any.
